WikiLeaks: Assange granted permission to appeal extradition to US

26 March 2024

A British court has given WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange permission to launch a full appeal against his extradition to the United States.

The 50-year-old Australian is wanted in the US on espionage charges related to the publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents in 2010.

Assange's lawyers argued that he should not be extradited because he would not receive a fair trial in the US and that his extradition would be politically motivated.

The judge agreed to allow Assange to appeal against the extradition order, but said that he would not be released from prison while the appeal is ongoing.

Assange has been held in Belmarsh Prison in London since 2019, when he was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

The US government has been seeking Assange's extradition since 2017, but the process has been delayed by a number of legal challenges.

The full appeal is expected to be heard in the coming months.
